The series Homenagem a Pitágoras (Homage to Pythagoras, 2012), by Felippe Moraes, presents a photographic sequence in which a simple gesture, repeated in successive stages, gradually reveals the formation of a pentagram. The set of images follows the emergence of this classical geometric figure, turning an everyday action into a visual process that brings out the mathematical relations present within its structure.

The pentagram, the central figure of the final composition, contains within its geometry a network of specific proportions, among them what is known as the golden ratio. The work uses sequential photography to make this process of construction visible, allowing the viewer to follow the passage between spontaneous movement and geometric organization.

By recording each stage of the action, the series shows how mathematical patterns can emerge from seemingly simple gestures, bringing together bodily experience, observation and geometric thought.

The work’s title refers to Pythagoras (c. 570 – c. 495 BCE), a foundational figure in the history of mathematics and Western philosophy. In antiquity, the pentagram was used as a symbol of the Pythagorean community and was associated with the idea of numerical harmony that, according to this tradition, structured both music and the cosmos.

Within the geometry of the pentagram are recurring proportional relations that, throughout history, have been interpreted as examples of balance and mathematical order. By evoking this figure, the work establishes a direct dialogue with this intellectual tradition, bringing the field of contemporary art closer to the history of mathematics and geometry.
