Composição Aleatória #2 (Random Composition #2), 2024
Brushed metal, wood and automotive paint
3 pieces, 300 × 300 × 80 cm each
The series Composição Aleatória #2 (Random Composition #2, 2024), by Felippe Moraes, presents three interactive sound sculptures conceived as large-scale musical instruments. Built in brushed metal, wood and automotive paint, the pieces invite the public to sit in pairs and produce sound through movement. These sound sculptures enrich visitors’ sensory experience and highlight the importance of sound sculpture within contemporary art.
The project derives from the installation Composição Aleatória, originally presented in the exhibition Solfejo in 2019 at Centro Cultural FIESP, São Paulo. In the original work, suspended nets activated sound tubes and clappers that vibrated according to the movement of bodies. Every gesture made by the visitor became an agent of sonic transformation, generating unpredictable compositions.
Felippe Moraes’s sound sculptures not only challenge perception, but also create a unique space of interaction and exploration.
In this new version, first presented at CAIXA Cultural Brasília in 2024, the artist develops three independent sculptures that activate twelve suspended bells, four in each structure. Together, these bells form the twelve-tone scale, based on the idea of equivalence among all notes of the chromatic scale.
When manipulated by the public, the sculptures produce sound sequences that are always different. Each interaction generates a unique composition, built collectively and determined by the arbitrary movements of participants. The result is music that never repeats itself in the same way, continually asserting itself as a random, shared composition.
