New exhibition occupies the museum’s outdoor area with interactive sound sculptures that invite the public to create unpredictable compositions from movement, encounter, and chance.
Starting June 13, 2026, MAC Niterói presents Felippe Moraes – Composição Aleatória (Random Composition), a new solo exhibition by Felippe Moraes occupying the museum’s plaza with three large-scale interactive sound sculptures. With free admission and a curatorial text by Amanda Abi Khalil, the show invites the public to take part in creating collective musical compositions in dialogue with Oscar Niemeyer’s architecture and the landscape of Guanabara Bay.
The exhibition presents the series Composição Aleatória #2 (2024), made up of three sculptures that function as collective musical instruments. The works invite the public to sit in pairs and rock the structures, triggering twelve suspended bells arranged according to the twelve-tone scale. Each activation produces unique sound combinations, transforming the museum’s plaza into a space of listening, coexistence, and shared creation.
As the artist explains:
“There is no fixed score, and no repetition is possible. Each activation generates a unique composition, produced by the bodies, the wind, the landscape, and the encounters.“
Derived from the work Composição Aleatória (2019), first presented in the exhibition Solfejo, at Centro Cultural FIESP, the series deepens Moraes’s investigation into systems, chance, participation, and collective experience. The music emerges as the result of relationships in constant transformation, shaped by visitors’ movements, atmospheric conditions, and the interactions that take place in the space.
The exhibition also marks a decade of projects developed by Felippe Moraes in dialogue with MAC Niterói. Since 2016, the artist has carried out interventions investigating the relationships between the museum’s architecture, its surroundings, and ways of occupying public space. Among them are Progressão (2016), Samba Exaltação (2021), and the curatorship of Projeto Mirante (2022).
By installing the sculptures in the museum’s plaza, Moraes continues this research and proposes a space of encounter between art and everyday life.
“Historically, people feel distanced from art institutions. MAC Niterói is no different, with the added challenge of being in constant dialogue with a breathtaking landscape and an architecture so powerful that it often eclipses the collections and programming. By occupying the museum’s plaza, I seek to activate this space of encounter, where art and curatorial research take shape by coming into direct contact with visitors.“
In direct dialogue with the modernist architecture, the maritime landscape, and the flow of visitors, Felippe Moraes – Composição Aleatória transforms MAC Niterói’s outdoor space into a sensitive field where sound, body, and territory vibrate together.
