The exhibition Progressão (2016), a solo show by Felippe Moraes at the Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Niterói, presents an installation composed of twenty-six flags that reveal, in precise gradation, the percentage of black in each shade of gray. The work is set directly within Oscar Niemeyer’s architecture and the landscape of Guanabara Bay, creating an experience that depends on the movement of the body and the action of the wind.

Along the museum’s ramp, the public moves through a continuous progression running from absolute black to total white, while the numbers inscribed on the flags operate in contrast, inverting this tonal logic. This inversion puts pressure on the relationship between mathematical language and sensory perception, calling into question the stability of the systems we use to understand the world.

Between visual and conceptual extremes, the exhibition proposes a field of nuance. The work suggests that, in aesthetic experience as much as in political and emotional dimensions, there exist intermediate zones that escape binary readings, affirming complexity as a fundamental condition of reality.
